Why Losing a Friend Can Hurt as Much as a Breakup
Velvet Muse · Oct 20, 2026
A friendship breakup is a unique type of grief that lacks social support or rituals. We have music, ceremonies, and sympathy for romantic breakups, but we have almost nothing for the end of a long-term friendship. This makes the loss even harder to process, often leading us to grieve in silence and feel silly for the intensity of our emotions.
That pain is not silly. A close friend is a witness to your life, and losing that person feels like losing a piece of your own history. A friendship is a significant relationship, and its end is a legitimate loss that deserves to be acknowledged.
Allow yourself the space to grieve. You do not need to rush the healing process just because others do not understand. Honor the history you shared. Over time, you will make room for new friendships that can help you carry the next chapter of your life, even if your old friends cannot be replaced.
