How to Love Someone Without Losing Your Own Identity

Velvet Muse · Oct 20, 2026

A common mistake in relationships is losing your sense of self as you grow closer to your partner. You may start adopting their habits, hobbies, and opinions while abandoning your own, believing this is what love requires. In reality, this is self-abandonment. The very qualities that made you who you are—and who your partner initially fell in love with—are the things you begin to suppress. A healthy relationship consists of two whole individuals choosing to be together, not two halves trying to become one person. You must prioritize your own friendships, personal interests, and solitude. The version of you that remains independent is the version that stays truly lovable. Do not sacrifice your identity for a relationship, as the relationship itself will suffer when you are no longer the person your partner fell for.
