Love vs. Infatuation: How to Tell the Difference
Velvet Muse · Oct 20, 2026
Infatuation and love often feel identical at the beginning of a relationship, leading to much confusion. Infatuation is a temporary chemical high characterized by intense, obsessive thoughts about your partner. It is the initial spark, not the long-term fuel. Love, by contrast, is what develops after that initial high fades. It is quieter, more stable, and more durable. It provides a sense of peace rather than a constant rush. Many people end a relationship as soon as the infatuation phase subsides, mistakenly believing the love has disappeared. In reality, that is usually when real love begins. Understanding that intensity naturally fades allows you to recognize when a relationship is transitioning into something deeper. Do not walk away from a relationship simply because the feverish phase of infatuation has passed.
